It will soon be Halloween. It’s a very anticipated holiday for many people. Kids specially love it, for the candy and dressing up in costumes. The problem is most people is that most people don’t know how this tradition originated.
The holiday originated with an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. At the festivals people would light bonfires and wear costumes to scare ghosts away. The costumes were animal skin and heads. Around 2,000 the Celts in Ireland, France, and the United Kingdom. They celebrated their new year on the first of November. This celebration was them marking the end of summer and the beginning of the harvest season. They also celebrated the beginning of the cold winter and also associated it with human death. They believed the ghost of the dead returned. When the first of November was established as the day of all saints by Pope Gregory III, it incorporated someone Samhain’s traditions.
The day before the first of November became to be known as Hallow eve and later became Halloween. Over time Halloween evolved into what we know today, with activities like trick-or-treat, dressing up in costumes. Costumes have had a drastic change over the years in style and in price.
